Pre-Conference Seminar 1: LED Lighting in the Marketplace

Instructor: Daniel Blitzer, Principal, PRACTICAL LIGHTING WORKSHOP


Designed for both newcomers and people with experience, the workshop will provide the
audience with an understanding of how white light LED luminaires and replacement lamps
that are currently on the market compare to their conventional counterparts.

About the Instructor: Dan Blitzer, Principal of The Practical Lighting Workshop, brings 30 years of experience
to the issues of marketing, product technology, energy effectiveness and sustainability in lighting. The Practical Lighting Workshop is a consultancy providing strategy, marketing, communication, and training services for the lighting industry. Through The Practical Lighting Workshop, Dan serves as a principal faculty member at the Philips Lighting Application Center, working with specifiers, distributors, end users, and sellers in workshops ranging from fundamentals to application and selling techniques. He also provides training focused on energy-efficient lighting to the lighting industry, electrical distributors, end users, and public utilities, and serves as a continuing educator for the American Lighting Association. He is currently part of the Steering Committee of the Next Generation Luminaires design competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers. Dan is a member and current past president of the Designer's Lighting Forum of New York, a member of the IESNA, and the International Dark Skies Association, and a director of The Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education. He is Lighting Certified, holds a BA in Economics from Columbia University, and lives in New York City.

  • The LED, the most robust component in the system: "gated" methods for ensuring
    quality; accelerated testing to predict lifetime performance; and thermal management
    for LEDs and systems (Christian Jung, OSRAM OPTO SEMICONDUCTORS)
  • LED reliability - what operating parameters have a direct effect on an LED's
    performance over time. How to scale the reliability characteristics of a single LED to a
    system with multiple LEDs (Rudolph Hechfellner, PHILIPS LUMILEDS LIGHTING)
  • BREAK & DEMONSTRATIONS: participants are welcome to circulate amongst several
    demonstrations featuring modeling tool software, hands-on examples of failure
